Leading Recovery in the North

Home to 35% of the country’s population and comprised of Jewish, Arab, and Druze residents, northern Israel suffered massive damage from the war, which forced 70,000 people to evacuate, caused 240,000 people to live in the line of fire, and ruined critical infrastructure. The Israeli government has entrusted JDC as a key partner in a multi-year initiative to restore northern Israel.

In an area where many towns are too small, with services stretched too thin, JDC has provided life-saving humanitarian aid and emergency preparations during the crisis, as well as facilitated rebuilding infrastructure and critical social services in collaboration with 30+ municipalities across the North.

Now JDC is mobilizing its full range of expertise to help this region and the most vulnerable people to recover and rebuild.

Our Work Today

What We’ve Done Since October 7

JDC is beginning a multi-year initiative in partnership with the Israeli government to help the war-torn northern region and its most vulnerable people recover and rebuild, including

  • Helping cities maximize available government funding to support returning evacuees with housing, healthcare, education, and social services — critical for rebuilding lives and communities.
  • Integrating regional development plans to attract new residents and boost the economy. This includes 35,000-50,000 new housing units and expanding medtech and foodtech industries to generate 30,000 new jobs.
  • Supporting displaced seniors returning home by preparing their homes, distributing essential supplies, and ensuring their access to social services.
  • Deploying and expanding community caseworkers for returning elderly evacuees who will work with local departments to identify at-risk and homebound seniors and provide emotional support, access to services, and help access benefits and medical care.
  • Building Blue Zones — communities that promote health, resilience, and longevity for Israeli seniors. JDC will train 450 health professionals and volunteers, establish peer-led wellness activities, and provide holistic support to older adults in hard-hit areas, ensuring they can age with dignity and strength.
  • Launching the Older Adult Year of Service program in the North, which builds on a successful model launched in the South. Older adults will dedicate a year of volunteering, using their time and experience to support local rebuilding efforts and strengthen hard-hit communities.
